Community Initiative for Emissions Research and Applications (CIERA)

Welcome to the collaboration space of CIERA, a community effort to improve emissions information within the Global Emissions InitiAtive (GEIA).

The goal of CIERA is to catalyze emissions research by facilitating:

  • the consistent, timely, and transparent development of emissions inventories at all scales;
  • evaluations and analyses of emissions datasets; and
  • the exchange and communication of emissions information.

CIERA and its GEIA companion program ECCAD are part of the Air Quality Community of Practice, an international community working to enhance the interoperability of air quality and climate data, through the development of standardized data structures, conventions, and tools.

Emissions datasets are developed, maintained and distributed by a large number of organizations.  To avoid redundancy and facilitate access to the broad range of datasets available, CIERA is working to establish a distributed service model to locate and assess data resources. CIERA seeks to create common metadata and web services standards which will allow emissions data catalogs to be automatically created and updated.  Improved metadata will help researchers locate and evaluate the appropriateness of the datasets.

Establishing data and metadata standards creates a common language by which researchers can access and intercompare available datasets. Standards would allow the community to spend more time analyzing data instead of reformatting it.
